The Fine Art of Maternity Photography

Pregnancy is a unique experience that most women cherish. Pregnancy gives women the opportunity to nurture a life and consummate their womanhood. As the feelings and experiences associated with pregnancy are transient, it is a good idea for women to capture that special period through the art of maternity photography. Maternity photography is becoming increasingly popular among many expecting mothers, and is seen as a creative way to preserve special memories. However, as maternity photography is somewhat different from other variants of photography such as Fashion Photography and photojournalism, it is vital for women to consider some tips before posing at the photographer’s studio.

Maternity portraits are best taken starting from the 6th month onwards, though some women wait until their 7th or 8th months when their pregnant bellies are at their most prominent. However, for women who are gaining a lot of weight or carrying more than one baby, it is much better to have the portrait session done sooner.

Several hours before the photo shoot, women should take off any garments that have tight elastic bands or straps like slacks, undergarments, bras and even socks to ensure that the elastic or strap marks do not leave marks on the skin. Pregnant women are also advised not to apply any lotion on their skin prior to the photo shoot as lotion makes the skin appear shiny. Shiny skin never looks good in photography.

Tops worn during
maternity portraits
should be form-fitting, especially around the bust line. Oversized shirts won’t accentuate a woman’s curves and large blouses and shirts will hide the shape of the belly. Moreover, oversized shirts will make a pregnant woman appear heavier in the photographs. The subject should choose clothing that covers the breasts but accentuates or exposes the belly.

Women undergoing
pregnancy portraits
should also bring some nice bras and panties to choose from during the photo shoot. Hands and feet will be conspicuous, so it’s a good idea to have a manicure and pedicure done beforehand to enhance these features during the shoot.

Face powder and face blotters should be applied to soften the face and remove facial oil. Pregnant women are also advised by

professionals to relax during the shoot and be proactive about making suggestions to the photographer. As long as these tips are taken into consideration, the portrait session should be a success.
