Bringing my camera to France?

I need some advice about bringing my camera to France. I have a nikon D40, and an 18-55mm lens that I want to bring to France to take some pictures, however, I’m reading through this handbook we got for our trip (I’m going on a school trip) it says not to bring any expensive electronics/possessions. This kind of make me nervous. I really want to bring my camera, but I’m afraid something is going to happen to it or something.
